Adult Continuing Education
|
Adult continuing education is a major area of growth among foremost colleges and universities, as more working people are returning to school. Conforming to the unique needs of the non-traditional student, online courses utilizing the Internet has become a booming business as educators look to grab a share of this increasing market. The result is a successful enrollment market, because in adult education you find the students that are serious, focused, and ready to pay to have their knowledge increased.
With the record numbers of young college graduates entering the job force, returning to college has become a necessity for adults to compete in the job markets. Adult education is not a new thing, but now, more than ever, the non-traditional students market is making its mark in the college arena. More and more adults are tapping into the certainty that having a degree can bring new promotions and greater pay increases. Knowledge is the name of the game, and that goes for those who have been in the job market for a while as well. To get the better job, or to get the pay raise, or to get the respect of one's colleagues, adult continuing education is bringing results to those who are looking to move ahead or stay ahead of the younger job force. Educators are taking note of this major market. Traditional colleges, on campus universities, and online learning schools all offer flexible courses to meet the needs of non-traditional students.
This college focus generally offers accelerated courses, allowing the serious student to work at their own speed and finish quickly. The Internet is loaded with special schools, and some accredited, that offer work at a personal pace. Associates, Bachelor, or Master's degrees are all available for the non-traditional student who decides it is time to change their life and or career. There are also certification programs available in fields, requiring less than twenty hours of credits. The career fields seem endless, as colleges are quickly evolving with the Internet. There are programs that offer health education, business, technology, and counseling adult continuing education courses. And, the Internet is perfect for this student group, because non-traditional students have limited time to devote to schoolwork. Having school online allows a student to study around their jobs and family.
As with any major life decision, choosing adult education should be carefully considered before committing. Though today's educators are making it easier for adult education in flexible time and the instant access through the Internet, hard work and study are still required of all students. The advantage some adults have is that they know what field they want to study, and they are ready to commit. Lifetime experience can play a major role in the ease with which knowledge takes hold, too. Many things lived through will make better sense with the details that many classes will fill in - such as in History and Sociology.
Be sure and evaluate the family's circumstances, the current job position, and the amount of time and energy going to be needed to complete an education before choosing adult continuing education. Be prepared to make sacrifices in personal pleasures and entertainment. The time not committed to class will be needed for family. The two can be healthily managed and balanced, but be sure to make the conscious effort to maintain that balance. The end goal is well worth the effort. "Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he" (Proverbs 29:18).
