Art School

Art schools offer programs in creative areas including graphic design, culinary arts, fashion, advertising, photography, and fine arts. Many also offer training in some of the more contemporary creative arts fields such as game design, media arts, multimedia and web design, computer animation, motion pictures and television, and more. Obviously creativity and natural talent are requisites for careers in the creative arts, but an art school can offer training to refine and develop these abilities and give graduates an advantage in the competitive job industry. "Therefore God giveth thee of the dew of heaven, and the fatness of the earth, and plenty of corn and wine." (Genesis 27:28)

There are numerous schools from which to choose. Most do not offer programs in all areas, so first identify a creative area such as interior design as a starting point for the search. Next, determine what type of degree that is desired. Students can earn certificates, associates, or bachelor's degrees. If a bachelor's degree is what is desired, make sure to only evaluate art schools that offer a four-year program.

Many colleges and universities offer both associate's (2 year programs) and bachelor's degrees in the creative arts. Associate programs tend to focus more on the hands-on creation of art rather than the academics or history related to it, which would be included in a four-year program. Many community colleges also offer associate programs in areas of the creative arts such as graphic design or web design and these programs are generally much more affordable than comparable courses at a university. A specialty art school focuses typically on only one genre of the creative arts such as interior design, photography, or fashion.

Gaining entry into an art program is often very similar to securing admittance for any college program. Community colleges tend to have less stringent academic requirements for admittance than universities. Some of the higher end art schools may require a performance component or the submission of a portfolio of student work as part of the acceptance process. Online directories abound on the Internet that list and give basic information about the school or links to their website. These directories enable individuals to search by location, specialty or major, and program type, such as whether the school offers online or distance education.

Even with a wealth of natural talent, training from an art school validates one's natural abilities and equips students with the other necessary skills to succeed in the business world. Artists many need training in business management and promotion to be successful. Also with the importance of the computer to most creative fields, most offer training on the most up-to-date software applicable. Complementing natural abilities with formal training at an art school can enable one to get paid for what they love to do most -create!
