Paralegal Programs
|
A paralegal program is a course of study that, upon successful completion, leads to interesting paraprofessional careers in the legal profession. In addition to employment opportunities in law firms, graduates of paralegal programs are prepared to work for corporate offices, government agencies, and banks, including an entire host of other industries.
Courses in these programs can cover topics such as legal terminology, research, criminal law, civil and business litigation, contract law, and real estate law. In addition, students are trained in keyboarding (if they are not already proficient) and computer applications, including how to conduct legal research using the Internet. Some paralegal programs offer internships as part of their curriculum. This on-the-job training is an extremely valuable opportunity for students to see what the real job is like as well as to gain actual experience to add to resumes after completing a paralegal program.
There are many courses of study to choose from when looking into this line of work. Paralegal programs vary in length and quality. There are certificate courses, associate degree plans, and bachelors degrees available. The certificate programs usually provide intensive training within a short period of time (typically four to twelve months), while the degree courses typically include study of other academic subjects as well. Fewer than half of the formal current courses of study are accredited by the American Bar Association. Although such an accreditation is not required by schools to offer a this course of study, some employers find it a worthy credential.
There are many distance learning options available for this career choice. Online classes are becoming an increasingly popular way for people from all walks of life to pursue higher education. Also known as e-learning, these classes offer instruction electronically. In addition to textbook readings, a paralegal program may deliver instruction through email, audio CDs, DVDs, and interactive computer programs. Although the appeal of a distance learning study course is obvious, students should be sure that they are self-disciplined enough to make the most of the courses while working alone. As with most educational pursuits, the effort one puts into anything determines the benefits reaped.
Career growth is an important factor when choosing any career path. Graduates of paralegal programs can choose to specialize in a particular area or advance to managerial positions. The job outlook for paralegals is extremely bright because lawyers continue to hire paralegals to help offset the cost of doing the administrative tasks themselves. However, competition can be tight as many schools are graduating numerous well-skilled and motivated candidates. Working in the ever-changing field of law can be exciting and fulfilling. God is certainly interested in justice, and pursuing an education in this field is a wise move. "Learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow" (Isaiah 1:17).
