Herniated Cervical Disc

A herniated cervical disc takes place in the upper end of the spine and can affect the neck and shoulders with pain and sometimes extreme discomfort. All of the spine's vertebrae have cushions in between them that are gel-like in appearance and constitution with a tough outer cover. Over time or through stress on the disc, this spongy cushion can begin to deteriorate and become like oatmeal or it can begin to push out from between the vertebrae and bulge, much like a balloon might do. When that occurs, the disc can begin to press on the nerves that run up and down the spine, and in the case of a cervical disc abnormality, severe pain can result in the neck and shoulder areas. Sometimes a herniated cervical disc can mimic carpal tunnel syndrome or rotator cuff discomfort or cause tingling in the hands or arm.

When the disc begins to push in the spinal cord, it is called compression which can cause more serious issues. Sometimes a person who has a herniated cervical disc will begin walking is an aggravated manner, sometimes stumbling or falling. In other cases, there may be some difficult with doing precision work with the hands, or there may be tingling in the legs. Experts suggest that generally speaking, this type of spine injury occurs in the thirty to fifty year old patient range and may be the result of aging or of some injury due to lifting, turning, or an accident like a motor vehicle crash. The type of pain and the severity of the discomfort can often help the attending physician to discover where the problem is even before the obligatory tests are run such as an X-ray and MRI.

The higher the position on the spine, the smaller the vertebrae bones and the smaller the discs are also. But because the space for the nerves is smaller, any disc abnormality is magnified for the possibility of greater pain and discomfort. In the majority of cases, arm tingling and pain is the most widely experienced symptom of a herniated cervical disc. One may also have a disc issue when grip is weakened or when arm strength is suddenly decreased, but in most cases, it is arm pain that signals a problem. In many cases, medication and non-surgical treatments ca n help resolve this kind of spine issue.

To rule out something more serious, most orthopedists that treat patients for a herniated disc will run a number of tests to pinpoint the exact problem. In some cases, a myelogram is performed to give an exact location and a clear picture to the surgeon of the issues involved. This procedure is obtained by the puncture of the spine with a needle and then injecting dye into the area of the injury. This procedure, often taking about an hour, will often be followed by the patient having to remain with an elevated head in the hospital for about eight hours. Plenty of water will need to be consumed in order to flush out the dye. There are some minimal risks to this procedure and one scheduled for this procedure should talk to their physician to clear up any questions he or she might have.

Physicians always attempt to do the most conservative treatment first and if the herniated cervical disc trauma is minimal, the doctor may recommend a cervical collar. Most of these things are quite homely and unappealing aesthetically so there might be a market for someone who can combine proper medical design and something that has a little fashion sense. And by the way, buying the collar online might be a lot cheaper than allowing the surgeon to supply it. Sometimes traction at home might be prescribed and these are weird looking devices that are designed to help stretch the neck. One is designed like a pulley system with a jug of water for a weight. But, uhhhh, you better clear this with the doctor first.

Many people who have neck and back issues begin with a trip to the chiropractor. While these specialists cannot prescribe drugs for pain relief, their ability to adjust and stretch patient joints and bones often brings about a measure of relief. Because surgery is often a rarity for cervical issues, gentle chiropractic might be a place to begin. But make sure and choose a DC that has a good track record and whose practice can be examined by checking with the BBB or the local medical society. When we are hurting physically, like when suffering from a herniated cervical disc, we can think of little else than relief. When we are truly in the position God wants us to be in, we cannot be satisfied until we are free of our sin. "Have mercy on me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness, according to the multitude of they tender mercies blot out my transgressions, and wash me thoroughly from my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin." (Psalm 51: 1, 2)

In some rare cases there is the possibility of having a herniated cervical disc replaced. It is not something that is available for every patient. Often, the fusion of vertebrae bones if offered before the replacement of a bulging herniated cervical disc. The fusion surgery may provide a limited range of motion, so a patient should carefully talk to the surgeon before agreeing. the best patient that an orthopedic surgeon can have is one who has fully researched all the possibilities himself. A patient who has done his or her homework ahead of time and can wisely converse with the doctor on all options can more likely rest that his decision was the best one.
